Football has always been popular in the Newhall area and a team existed as far back as 1879. In 1887 Newhall had two teams, Newhall Rangers and the quaintly named Newhall Heroes. Newhall had a team competing in the Burton Junior league in 1890 while Newhall St. John and Newhall Rangers competed in the then Burton Amateur League.

The club is based in the reputed largest village in England and in 1920 had five teams: Newhall Rangers, Newhall Amateurs, Newhall St. Johns,  Newhall Swifts and Reserves. A picture of the most famous team from that era adorns the clubhouse wall.

Newhall United were formed in 1926 to provide a local team for the miners of the area to play in. In 1928-29 season the club lost in the final of the  Burton Challenge Cup but achieved success later winning  in 1931 and 1939. The Burton First Division Championship was won by the club between 1926 and 1947, while the Reserve side managed the double in their respective league and cup competition in 1960.

After World War Two, Newhall United reformed playing on the recreation park before moving to a ground at Alma Road in the village and then later to their current ground the Hawfields. In 1950 two pieces of land were bought for the club. One which wasbought for just £100 was sold over a decade ago for a six figure sum to fund the building of the current clubhouse.

United played in the Central Alliance League then the East Midland League against the deadly enemy – Gresley Rovers – regularly attracting well over a thousand spectators to the Hawfields.

Newhall became founder members of the Derbyshire Premier League in 1972 winning the championship in 1974 and 1979. The League Cup was also brought back to the South Derbyshire village in 1973.

During the seventies (a golden period for the club), The Bass Vase (believed to be the most valuable trophy in the country) twice  was won by the Blues. The most memorable victory was a 1-0 win against a Burton Albion side at Eaton Park.

Unfortunately the nineties were not so rosy despite a new clubhouse which, was opened in front of 400 spectators who watched a 3-1 defeat against a full strength Gresley Rovers side. The 1st team made a four year return to Burton and District where  the foundations of the club’s current committee were formed.

Three seasons ago the Club achieved its goal, to return to Senior Football and has since been promoted twice.

Funding was obtained from the Football Foundation and Waste Recycling Environmental to flatten the pitch that had been an advantage against many visiting sides through the years. The last game was played on the infamous sloping pitch in February 2004 (thanks to fixture changes by the league)prior to the work commencing on 1st March 2004.

A new drainage system was fitted under the pitch to eradicate water logging and all work (thanks to the efforts of the players and committee at the club) was finished on time to start season 2004/5.

The Club is now well positioned in continuing  to regain its former glory in future years.
